Tip: If you see “Need at least one Investment and one Redemption,” add both types—XIRR needs cash going out and coming back.
4 How the calculator works (in detail)
Step 1 — You provide cash flows
Each row is a transaction with a Date, Amount, and Type:
- Investment = money out → stored as negative.
- Redemption = money in → stored as positive.
- We sort by date and use the first date as reference.
Step 2 — Discount to present (XNPV)
Step 3 — Solve for r where XNPV=0 (XIRR)
- Newton–Raphson (fast)
- Bisection fallback (stable)
Result & summary
- XIRR %
- Total invested / value / gain
- Duration (days)
